Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. Ford suffered from anxiety disorder that was rooted in word associations as a young teenager. Ford began performing in her teen years and joined part of the National Youth Theatre. She got into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just one month, she decided that it wasn't the right fit for her. Ford rather applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama, finally winning an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler who is a character that was recurring on Doctor Who. Ford was not able to complete her degree in 1993. However, in 1991, Ford had made her debut on television on the show Surgical Spirit. At that point, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate appeared in programs on television like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London Burning. Tate's regular involvement in the theatre led her to join the Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 Season. Tate was soon recognized for her stand-up comedies that were added to her repertoire in 1996.
